Jura – Mainland Cable Construction and Survey Update

The replacement Jura – Mainland undersea cable operated by Scottish & Southern Energy Power Distribution (SSEPD) was successfully laid by Briggs Marine across the Sound of Jura from Carsaig Bay on the mainland to Lealt Bay on Jura between the 2nd and 4th December 2014.  It was energised on Sunday December 7th 2014 and is now fully operational.

Survey work is now due to be carried out between the 12th and 19th December 2014 by the vessel Forth Jouster.  This survey is being carried out to gather information to inform the cable protection plan for the route.  Cable protection works are due to be carried out in 2015.

Information about the survey work is provided in a Notice to Mariners that can be downloaded here.   Information about the survey vessel (including a link that shows the current location of the vessel) is provided below:-

Survey operations will be carried out during the hours of daylight.  Forth Jouster will display the appropriate day shapes / signals and at times of reduced visibility will display appropriate lights.  The vessel will actively transmit an AIS signal.  A continuous listening watch will be maintained on VHF Channel 16 and DSC.

During survey operations, Forth Jouster will be restricted in the ability to manoeuvre.  All vessels operating in the area are requested to maintain a safe distance and pass at minimum speed.
