Western HVDC Link: Rescheduled towing operations in the Dee

Mariners are advised that from the 24th to 27th June 2014 towing operations are due to be carried out between Mostyn Deep and Connah’s Quay in the Dee Estuary.  A notice to mariners can be downloaded here and is summarised below.

The workboats Vital and Vixen will be towing nine lengths of plastic pipe up to 450m long to Connah’s Quay where they will be landed ashore.  This will be a daylight operation over the high water period.

Details of the vessels involved in these operations, along with their present location can be found on MarineTraffic.com via the links below:-

  • Vital: Tug | Call sign 2G519
  • Vixen: Tug | Call sign 2FJL9

Vessels will be monitoring VHF Channel 14 throughout the operation.

The towing vessels will be restricted in their ability to manoeuvre and other vessels are reminded to keep clear (as per the IMO ColRegs Rules 9 & 18).  Mariners are also requested to proceed with extra caution and at slow speed in the vicinity of any tug and tow.  The pipes are semi-submerged and may be difficult to see.

Vessels passing through the Mostyn Deep anchorage overnight are advised that the Thor Goliath and pipes will be in this area and that the vessel may be manoeuvring at the turn of the tide.

The notice to mariners has been issued by Captain Simon Capes, Harbour Master for the Dee Conservancy.  Captain Capes can be contacted by e-mail or by phone on +44(0)1244-371428.

This notice cancels the previous notice to mariners issued about this operation.  This notice is self cancelling on the 30th June 2014.

If you have any queries about the Western Link project, please contact Jim Andrews, Fisheries Liaison Officer by e-mail or by phone on +44(0)7908-225865.
